Early German Saltglaze Jug
Item: P2751
W 9.5″ D 9.5″ H 17.5″
Also known as a bellarmine, or by the archaic term, maskarone, these salt glazed jugs were primarily made by factories along the Rhine, but later in England and Holland. Found in a number of earthy glazes, they feature an applied, moulded face at the neck of the pot-bellied pitcher. This is a nice example and displays a number 4 beneath the mask. It does exhibit a few chips in the glaze.
