South Indian Red Painted Kathakali Box

From the Malabar coast of the state of Kerala, these domed boxes were traditionally used to store the costumes of the kathakali folk art dancers. Hand fashioned, in the form of a small, arched top trunk, this box features a lovely, tomato red lacquered finish with the finest of black tracery decoration throughout. It sports delicately executed, brass hinges and hasp and fine, hand forged, twisted iron swing bails on the sides.
